At Doe Run Farm, we
use no manure in our fields.
We do cover cropping, use generous amounts
of compost, and rotate our crops. We take annual soil samples to
determine if anything is lacking in our soil, that needs supplementation.
To control pests, we hand pick as much as possible, provide natural
habitat and nesting sites to our allies
such as songbirds, wasps, and
bats. We also plant flowers in and around the fields to encourage beneficial insects. Prior to each
planting cycle, we research various plants to determine which thrive in our area
and provide our farm supporters with maximum flavor and nutritional value.
We grow all of our transplants here on the farm. The heirloom vegetables that we grow, come from seeds that have been passed down through the generations of seed savers, and these seeds result in a vegetable that is "bred for flavor". We believe in saving seeds, so that they may be passed on to future generations. Some of our heirloom seeds are over 100 years old!
