About Doe Run Farm

NOTE TO CUSTOMERS:  DETAILS FOR THE FALL / EARLY WINTER CSA SEASON ARE NOW AVAILABLE ON THE WEBSITE.

Doe Run Farm is located in a picturesque valley in the hills of middle Tennessee.  In our part of the country, we have mild growing seasons which allow us to grow a wide variety of crops in summer and winter.  Because we grow vegetables specifically to be enjoyed at the family table, we have the freedom to grow the tastiest varieties available.  We are not concerned with how well the varieties will ship, or how long they will last on the grocer's shelf.  We place our priority on how things taste!  We offer an outstanding selection of vegetables that are your "old favorites", as well as an assortment of unique specialty crops.

Through our CSA program, we enjoy a direct connection with our CSA "Shareholders", which allows for an ongoing dialogue about our produce, our farm, and our farmer friends, that contribute to our CSA shares.  In addition, we want to provide our Shareholders with a connection to the land, that many people today feel they have lost.  We want their children to know where the food on their table came from, and how it came to be there!

On the farm, crop rotation to balance the soil, cover crops to maximize organic matter and minimize nutrient loss, seed selection, and providing natural habitat for beneficial insects, all share a significant role in growing high quality, delicious vegetables.  The rewards are a rich, living soil that produces bountiful vegetable crops.  When you purchase a CSA share from our farm, you are supporting the tradition of working with the soil as well as the environment, in ways that will provide food for our generation.  These practices will also insure that our soil can support the needs of future generations.  This is a good definition of "Sustainability".  Our farm friends that contribute to our CSA also share this philosophy.  We have a responsibility to the land we farm, to the insects, birds, and the many forms of wildlife which share our valley.  We are all a part of nature and dependent on one another.

Your farmers at Doe Run Farm

John and Judy McGary have lived in the North Alabama, Southern Tennessee area for the past 42 years.  We can’t tell you that we have been farming for 20 or 30 years, because we haven’t! We are both retired from other professions. What we can tell you is that for the last several years we have had the opportunity and the blessing of being able to tend the soil, improve it over time, and it has provided us in return with wonderful crops, and many, many friends and farm supporters who believe in our dedication to growing and providing fresh, local, healthy food for everyone to enjoy.

Having been raised on farms in Kentucky, we both always knew that one day-after our three children were grown and “on their own”, we wanted to be back on the farm. We really wanted to grow our own food as our families before us had always done. My grandparents always grew their own food and both lived well into their 90’s. I am a firm believer that their lifestyle, their deep faith, and eating food grown in their garden contributed largely to their longevity.

What we didn’t know was that we would not only be growing food for ourselves to enjoy, but that we would be growing food for the families that make up the farm’s CSA program! Life is always full of surprises, and we just followed our hearts, and prayed.  Someone once said that “farming is more about having faith in what you are doing than having control over it”!  “If you ain’t got faith, you ain’t going to last long”.

We would like to invite you to register today for our upcoming CSA season.  If you yearn to venture beyond the baby carrots and frozen peas on your dinner plate, give our CSA a try -- you won’t be disappointed!
